The Role of an ESA Recommendation

An ESA Letter functions as a professional recommendation for an emotional support animal, necessary for treating a recognized mental health disability. This official correspondence is issued individually and serves two primary functions: first, it secures your right to have your support animal reside with you in your home, thanks to the protections provided by the Fair Housing Act. Second, it ensures you are not required to pay typical pet rent or deposits. For the letter to be considered valid and legitimate, it must be drafted by a qualified and licensed mental health professional. The letter will contain your name, birth date, and professional confirmation of your disorder, but will not disclose your specific diagnosis.

What Protections Does an ESA Letter Grant Me for Housing?

An ESA letter gives you two major housing rights under federal law:

  1. Residency: It secures your right to live with your emotional support animal, even in rental properties that have strict "no-pet" rules or size/breed restrictions.

  2. Financial Exemption: It waives all fees and deposits normally associated with keeping a pet, such as monthly pet rent or security deposits.

How long is the ESA letter good for?

ESA letters are issued for one year from the date they are provided. While your letter doesn't suddenly become invalid, your landlord or housing provider has the right to request an updated copy annually to verify your continued need for the animal. To ensure you always meet housing requirements and avoid issues, annual renewal is strongly recommended.
